My Writing Passion

Now that I’ve started my writing career, I can’t help but think about different stories that I’d like to tell. At this point, I don’t plan on giving up my day job (as they say), so I have to be selective about what I write in my spare time.

While I don’t consider myself to be a writer of Christian novels (I don’t include “Jesus” or “God” in my works), I do feel that everything I write still needs to glorify God. I believe that my job as a writer is to point to the truths declared in the Bible. These may include specific characteristics of the Holy Trinity or different commands given for us to follow, such as loving those around us or forgiving those that have wronged us.

I feel that my writings can best be summed up by Matthew 13:34-35: “Jesus spoke all these things in parables to the crowds; he did not speak to them without a parable. This fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet: ‘I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has been hidden from the foundation of the world.’” (New English Translation) While some people can be turned off by direct religious talk, I believe I can best tell my stories and point to Biblical truths by using symbolism and allegory. This way, my fiction is more accessible to people who may not be followers of Jesus.

My first series of novels, The Freedom Protocols, takes place in a futuristic setting and involves a race of robots, so it certainly has a Sci-Fi bent. I’ve written this story primarily with adolescents in mind, though I feel that my work is still accessible to readers of all ages. I’m not sure that I would consider myself to be strictly a Sci-Fi author, but I do find it is easier for me to be symbolic in the Sci-Fi genre. I could see myself moving out of the Sci-Fi arena in the future, as long as I could continue to tell compelling stories that declare Biblical truths.
